Have you ever wondered how old your heart really is? Yes, it is a part of your body and you wouldn’t normally wonder about the age of your internal organs or you’d have a hard time remembering their birthdays but the heart is a completely different ball game.

In an interesting exercise, the average heart age of men and woman across the country were calculated, just as it was done by the CDC in the U.S.A. Now you’re probably wondering what heart age is, and obviously so since you’d probably think that it’ll be the same as that of your normal age.

But heart age is a little more intense. Heart age is actually a great estimate of your overall cardiovascular health. This is great in a way because it helps doctors discuss risks with their patients and motivate them to make positive lifestyle changes in their downward spiral so they can start climbing back up. The greater the disparity between the cardiovascular age and the person’s real age, the greater the danger lurking around him!

Alarming statistics that were found were namely that three out of every four adults had a heart aged much higher than themselves! Imagine a 32-year-old young man with a heart aged 50! isn't surprising? This can be credited to the habits that they harbor, such as high levels of cigarette smoking, alcohol and other such health hazards.

There was also a gender disparity, with the overall heart age for men being 8 years older than their age, and that of women being 5 years. But should you really care if your heart is aging faster than your body? The answer is yes! You definitely should because an older heart means a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Much to your disappointment there is no shortcut for this condition and you can only turn back the clock with some good old fashion diet, eating foods with lower cholesterol, going easy on the stress levels and being in tune with your body.

Another very important factor is keeping a healthy exercise regime and working your body for at least 30 minutes a day, even if it's just brisk walking!
