We’ve often heard the phrase, eat breakfast like a king! Or even, the good old ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. But what’s the big deal with breakfast? Isn’t it just like lunch and dinner? It’s just a meal we eat during the course of our day isn’t it?
The answer is quite interesting. Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day and I’m not saying that, science is. Your coaches, teachers, doctors and parents were all right when they told you to have a heavy breakfast since you need to be able to survive through the day without feeling lethargic and tired.
Breakfast actually means to break the fast that the body has been carrying out from the time you went to sleep till the time you woke up. Unless you eat in your sleep, you’d agree that the body has been without food and water for 6-8 hours up to the time you wake up. So you need a good breakfast to kick start your body’s metabolism and give you the energy to sustain yourself throughout the day.
It’s quite similar to starting a car with a full tank compared to one with half tank. Did you know that you can boost your examination scores just by eating breakfast! Studies have shown that eating a good heavy breakfast has shown to increase the concentration levels of the human mind and help stay more alert and aware throughout the day.
Most of us have the excuse that we don’t have time early in the morning and have to rush to our workplaces and colleges anyway, so who’s going to sit making breakfast right? It doesn’t need to be a three course meal!
Simply grabbing some fruits like apples and bananas to give your body some carb fuel is good enough. Besides that, you can spread some peanut butter on toast and have it on the go, or even make a nice smoothie with fruits, nuts and milk the previous night and have it on your way to work.
Where there is a will there is a way, eat breakfast and have a brilliant day!
Breakfast has also shown to aid weight management and weight loss among people. People who starve themselves in the morning (after already having starved the whole night) tend to go overboard and overeat as the day progresses, and end up becoming fat. Breakfast also gives the body necessary nutrients so that it can recover better, in case of people doing regular exercise. Skipping breakfast for gym goers is a major no no.
Try to incorporate a balance of protein and carbs in your breakfast. And eat eggs first thing in the morning if possible. Fruits and meat/egg along with a glass of milk or a bowl of cereal should be perfect. Change your eating habits today!
