One of the main factors that affect your sleep at night is your pillow. If you choose the wrong pillow, you can end up with headaches and tension in the neck and shoulder. This is the reason that you need to determine and choose the right pillow so that you wake up refreshed and ready for your day.

Find your preferred sleeping position

Some people prefer to sleep on their back most of the time, some sleep on their sides and some sleep on their stomach. If you know which position you sleep in, you will be able to choose the right pillow
For this purpose, you may need to spend a few nights trying to find out your favorite sleeping position.

1. When you go to bed spend some time on your back, on your sides, and on your stomach. Observe which one feels the most comfortable for you. For instance, if you spend half an hour on your stomach and don’t fall asleep then this is not your preferred sleeping position.

2. Also make a note of the position that you wake up in in the morning. Compare your wake up position for a few days.

Choose your preferred position

Once you discover your preferred sleeping position it is important to decide which pillow will be best for you.

1. If you sleep on your stomach then you need a soft fairly flat pillow or you may go without a pillow completely. If you use a soft pillow your neck will stay more in line with your spine
2. If you sleep on your back then you should look for a medium thick pillow. The pillow should not be too thick or too soft. The ideal pillow is one which is thicker and firmer on the bottom to provide support to the neck.
3. People who sleep on the side need a thicker, firmer pillow to support the neck
4. If you are a mixed sleeper then opt for a pillow of medium thickness and bit softer so that if can be used comfortably in different positions.

The another thing that you need to be careful about is the filling which can be of different types.

1. If you have any medical issues like asthma, allergies or chronic neck pain, then you need a particular type of filling
2. Cost is another factor to be considered as some fillings may be more expensive than others.

You can conduct further research online to find out which type of pillow and filling will suit you the most.
