According to Dr. Shilpa Kapoor who is a senior Ayurvedic doctor, if you wish to deal with osteoporosis then it is not just enough to strengthen your bones by eating calcium-rich foods. Instead, you also need to balance the Vata dosha in the body along with strengthening the bone marrow and the bones. You can get 200 calories and 352 mg of calcium from one-fourth cup of sesame seeds. At the same time, sesame seeds have a low glycemic index, and can also be consumed by diabetics. Sesame seeds are known to produce heat in the body and hence will be useful in balancing the Vata dosha in the body. This will reduce your risk of osteoporosis and bone-related diseases by enhancing the mineral density of the bones and reducing bone loss.
The best way to have sesame seeds in summer is to soak them in one cup of water and leave them overnight, consume them in the morning in order to attain healthy bones and bone marrow. On the other hand, in the winter you can simply chew one teaspoon of sesame seeds during the day and get the maximum benefits. If you find it difficult to eat sesame seeds in the raw form then, you can take them with jaggery or make till laddoos or chili by adding jaggery to sesame seeds.
If you have severe joint pain then massaging the joints with sesame oil or maha Narayan oil at least once a week is quite helpful. It will provide relief from pain and also balances the Vata dosha that is causing the joint pain.
However, people with Kapha dosha should not eat sesame seeds. If you have Kapha dosha then it is advisable to consume a good quantity of milk which is a good source of calcium and strengthens the bones. Such people can also season the milk with saffron, dates or almonds, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger or turmeric root. Apart from sesame seeds, consuming green vegetables like spinach, and turnip along with whole grains, fortified oatmeal, cabbage, broccoli, beans, sprouts, black gram and chickpeas are great for dealing with osteoporosis.
