Bored of the difficult do’s and don’t around being healthy? Here’s a new reprimand for gaining the pounds from the Kerala government. Beware! It can cause a serious hole in the pocket. Kerala Government proposed a 14.5% tax on junk foods sold in upscale restaurants as a way to control obesity. It is the 1st Indian state to impose a ‘fat tax’ . What if Mumbai goes the Kerala way and levies a fat tax to?

Mumbai, a time-poor city, where the on the run people take nutrition and health for granted. This comes down to poor eating habits. People usually eat that heavy fat convenient food at breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack or anytime when then suffer from a hunger pang. Obesity is alarming in Mumbai. People especially youngsters, being a complete slave of their palate, prefer consuming heavy fat laden snacks than a home cooked meals. Even the kids at age 10 are dealing with lifestyle and high obesity problems. There is a new trend in the office goers, they skip cooking meals in their workaholic life and consume restaurant foods. The growing fast food chain and growing obesity levels in Mumbai can surely be linked. Experts believe that this fat tax could really benefit Mumbai. When the money will pinch Mumbaikar, it will lead to a decrease in intake.

When a fat tax is levied a person will know how unhealthy their food is and when such a food would make a big hole in one’s pocket, he/she will surely think twice. ‘Even Indian food laden with empty calories and no nutrition should be covered in the tax’ said a clinical dietician in TOI interview. It is a healthy tax which will improve overall health and wellness of the junk-lovers Mumbaikars. Fat Tax may actually prod Mumbaikars to eat healthily. Will it really have an effect on obesity or people will spend some extra cash to enjoy their favorite burgers, pizza’s and fries?, only time will tell this!
