A Letter to the Plumpy Teen

Dear adolescent,

The other day I saw an obese girl being bullied by a bunch of boys because of her weight. The girl broke down and started crying. Being a nutritionist and a weight loss coach, I have seen most of my clients being bogged down because of their weight. I have heard their tales narrating their fears and difficulties. But seeing the young girl sob made me cringe.

I know having those extra pounds sucks. It feels wretched to be the plumpiest one in the room. It’s miserable to not fit into your favorite jeans easily. Your body feels like your biggest enemy. But hey, you don’t have to be bogged down by it. You are definitely more than your weight. Don’t let your weight affect your confidence. You aren’t designed to be stick thin. So, stop idolizing the skinny ones, for being skinny is not synonymous with being healthy.

During adolescence, all girls gain weight naturally in the form of body fat. This is an absolutely natural and healthy process. The worst decision you could make here for shedding those pounds is to stop eating. Skipping your meals won’t help you, darling. In fact, it will do more harm than good. So drop that idea of following a popular fad diet. And remember that the word ‘fat’ does not mean lazy and worthless. So, stop humiliating yourself.

But that doesn’t mean you would have to live with that extra weight all your life. Instead of following those crazy diets, resort to healthy eating and a balanced diet. Choose the right foods that are healthful and correct portion sizes. Well, that doesn’t imply giving up your favorite ice-cream. An occasional treat is always allowed (wink!). And gal, just start moving. That does not only mean hitting the gym straight away. Shake a leg to your favorite music, take up your favorite sport as a pastime or mix up various activities.

And most importantly, do not give up. Stop being that goofy sidekick and come to the center stage.Just be happy with your body the way it is at this moment because your future self could be anything. Don’t let your weight hold you back, as taking up a few extra inches of space is not that bad either.
