1. Flax seeds
Flax seeds are known for their high fibre content that aid digestion and help with proper utilization of fats and sugars. Research suggests a 28% decline in postprandial sugars due to regular consumption of flax seeds. A tablespoon of ground flax seed powder can be consumed with water every morning. Flaxseed can also be easily incorporated into the diet by sprinkling it over vegetable, gravies, dals and salad.
2. Bilberry leaves
Bilberry leaves have been used in Ayurvedic medicine since many centuries to control sugar levels. The Journal of Nutrition has recently stated that the high amounts anthocyanidin present in bilberry leaves stimulate the action of glucose-transporting proteins and also enhances fat metabolism. Bilberry leaf extract can be obtained by crushing the leaves. Consuming this extract on an empty stomach each morning had shown best results.
3. Basil leaves
We are no strangers to the medicinal value of basil leaves. Basil leaves are loaded with antioxidants and essential oils like eugenol and methyl eugenol. These compounds enhance pancreatic functioning and improve insulin sensitivity. Just chewing three to four basil leaves each morning has proven to be effective. A tablespoon of basil leaf juice also helps.
4. Psyllium husk
Psyllium husk, commonly known as Isabgol is used as a laxative. It is a little-known fact that psyllium husk is also effective in controlling sugar surges. The high fibre content slows the digestion and absorption of glucose, preventing peaks in sugar levels. Psyllium husk can be had easily along with water or milk after meals.
5. Bitter gourd
Bitter gourd delivers plant insulin polypeptide-P, a compound that imitates the action of hormone insulin produced by the pancreas. This helps in lowering the blood sugar level in the body. Bitter gourd can be consumed easily in the form of a vegetable. Bitter gourd juice can also be taken every morning.
6. Neem
This bitter leaf is known widely for its amazing health benefits. Neem improves insulin sensitivity, thus controlling sugar levels. Drinking juice of neem leaves on an empty stomach has shown best results.
7. Jamun
Jamun seeds are rich in a glycoside that inhibits the conversion of starch to sugar. This helps in lowering blood sugar. Eating five to six Jamuns in the morning has proved beneficial. Also, a spoonful of Jamun seed powder can be consumed daily.
